The Georgia Teachers Organization
The Georgia Teachers Organization (GTO) is an organizational body that hopes to create better work
conditions and environments for all educators in the state of Georgia. The
goal of this organization is to bring together all Georgia educators into a sole state organization which can talk out in behalf of the benefits that
they should receive. They believe that they could more effectively talk out for matters such as high salaries,
better retirement benefits and the abolishment of state salary step structure by which the veteran teachers are discriminated, if all
200,000 Georgia educators united. Through The Georgia Teachers
Organization, they could effectively communicate with the members and coordinate actions on critical issues that concern Georgia educators.
It is All about Volunteering
The Georgia Teachers Organization runs under the minimum resources and they do not even have a proper office space to carry out their
procedures. The organization is strictly run by the volunteers who wish to do some service behalf
of the educators who are doing an excellent service for the state of Georgia. The Georgia
Teachers Organization also tries to educate the educators on various issues, worries, and rights, so the educators know what they are
eligible and take necessary steps when required. Using an email communication network, the organization will expand and notify their member of all the
relevant issues. The organization recommends every Georgia educator to join the organization by paying a $25 annual membership fee to strengthen their efforts.
Motivating the Educators
The GTO promotes any lawmaking that would step-up the educator benefits and spirit. According to the organization every state that borders Georgia has full retirement benefits for educators after 25 years of service without an
early retirement penalty but Georgia does not offer this gain. In addition the Georgia Teachers Organization also appears for
several other movements such as ending the salary step caps which stops the salary increases of master teachers after 20 years of service and higher salaries for educators who
posses educational qualifications including masters, specialist and doctorate degrees.
The organization also state that the retirement benefit for each year of service should be increased to 3%. As a result 25 years of service would provide
75% (25*3%) salary upon retirement in contrast to the presently provided 60%. Furthermore, GTO maintains that since there are Georgia State employees who receive 90% of their salary at retirement, the educators should also
provided the same benefit.
Making Opportunities
When one joins the Georgia Teachers Organization one receives several gains such as being included in an action list
which notifies who to contact when critical matters break and also receiving email notifications about pending lawmaking
pertaining the profession. The names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of those who should be
reached to help pass important legislation would be given to the members. Moreover, members would receive the opportunity to attend local, regional and state assemblies and meetings to gain first-hand knowledge about
the ideas that other teachers might present to better the working conditions.
