UK Mobile Market Could See More Mergers

Last week the European regulators gave a formal permission to the two major mobile companies Orange and T-Mobile to go ahead with their proposed merger. The news of this merger has raised the interest of the market watchers and they are already trying to pick up signals of other mergers which could follow.

At the moment the technology press including the respectable and responsible online news site The Register has started looking at the possibilities of a merger between Vodafone and 3UK the smallest telecom company in the UK.

The signals of a merger in the near future are many. Shaun Collins of market analysis firm CCS Insight while speaking to the communication magazine Mobile Europe talked about the practical wisdom of such a merger. Vodafone and 3UK have already successfully merged their businesses in Australia and a second merger in UK would be a logical extension of the same business strategy. A merger will give both the companies an edge in this competitive market. Another reason for speeding up the processes must be the news that Hutchinson is also in fray in acquiring 3UK. The only other option could be a wide deal between Vodafone and O2 to facilitate network sharing.

All this news of merger has also brought in the fear of people losing their jobs. It is feared that as a result of the merger of T-Mobile and Orange approximately 2000 people will lose their jobs. The two companies have not yet confirmed it. The new entity will start its work only from next month and then it is expected that job cuts will be announced as a part of cost effective measures.
