Drivers in the UK Do Not Want to Undergo Safety Training
A recent research done by Corporate Vehicle Observatory in 12 different countries and supported by Arval shows that the employers believe that most of the drivers will not agree to the suggestion of undergoing training to ensure safe driving.
The proportion of negative answers to the question was higher in the UK as compared to Europe. 40% of managers responsible for fleets in the UK said that the drivers will not agree while the percentage in Europe was 34%.
More than 10% of the decision makers think that the drivers will definitely refuse to attend any such training. Another 30% think that they will most probably say no. Only a dismal 23% said that the drivers will definitely agree to a road safety training.
There were some differences in the response in smaller companies as compared from their bigger peers. In smaller companies, with below 100 employees, 41% of fleet managers think that drivers will not agree to safe vehicle training. The rate is lower, close to 25%, in larger companies, which have more than 1000 employees. Staff and management must be fully aware of and comply with health and safety regulations. Mike Waters from Arval explained the need for such training saying it is good for the company financially as well as safer for people. Driving is often the riskiest daily activity for most people and safety while driving cannot be ignored. The Health and Safety Executive estimated that road mishaps cost the economy close to £2.7 Billion per year. If the employers ensure better safety on the road, it can be financially beneficial for them as well.
