Working from Home - A Blessing or a Curse?

If you are among the increasing number of individuals who work from home, you know that it has some wonderful benefits - no traffic and parking hassles, no office politics to drag you down, nobody looking over your shoulder, you can wear your house slippers to work, and you can set flexible work hours. But these same great benefits come with drawbacks - a sense of isolation, no external pressure to keep you motivated and on task, and no limit to your work hours. In essence, if you are not careful you can easily find yourself “at work” all the time.

With some good planning, it is possible to reap the benefits and reduce the drawbacks of working from a home office. Here are 10 tips to help:

1. Begin with the big picture in mind. Clarify what needs to happen in the next three years in order for you to feel like your life has progressed in the way that you want it to.

2. Plan and organize your week so you are focused on your priorities - both professional AND personal ones. Do you find yourself putting things off that are important to you because you have so many urgent tasks that need your attention? Do you look back at the end of the day with regret and wish that you had spent your time focusing on more important things … such as time with your family, time for self-care, or time to work on an important project that has no deadline? Being technically proficient in your business or profession will only get you so far … especially if your life gets out of balance in the process.

We are all accustomed to making appointments with other people, but not necessarily with ourselves. Because most of us tend to focus on that which is urgent, we tend to put off activities that are important but have no deadline. Schedule “protected time” — time during the day when you let calls go into voice mail and you don’t check email — so you can concentrate on activities that are important but not urgent.

W. Clement Stone once said, “No matter how carefully you plan your goals, they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto.” If interruptions in your home office make it difficult to concentrate, consider going somewhere else to work on important projects requiring concentration.

Be clear about how you choose to structure your week.

* How much free time do you choose to spend away from work? * How much time do you choose to spend delivering the primary product or service you provide? Are you available evenings and weekends? * How much time do you choose to spend doing the support activities important to your work?

All of these activities affect each other. If you neglect support activities (returning phone calls, responding to email, follow-up, filing, etc.), things will start slipping through the cracks. Then it becomes difficult to take free time to relax and rejuvenate. Without free time, the quality of what you deliver will suffer. It becomes a viscious cycle!

3. Limit the number of places you post reminders of activities requiring your attention. I recommend that you check these three places daily:

* Your tickler file — visit http://www.orgcoach.net/products/ticklerpic.html for more information about how to set this up. * Your contact management program (such as ACT or Outlook) - This can contain your scheduled appointments with others, as well as your scheduled appointments with yourself and reminders for follow-up with others. * E-mail - Flag the items you need to come back to and do something with.

4. Create a Perhaps List . Most people have stashes of lists in multiple places - several legal pads containing to-do lists, sticky notes plastered on the computer monitor, the wall, the desktop, etc. Instead of writing these ideas down in multiple places, collect all of them in one place. 5. Schedule 10-15 minutes at the end of each workday to organize your work space and review your plans for tomorrow. Psychologists have found that we enjoy our non-work hours much more when we leave the office with an organized desk and a plan for the following day. This is also a good time to check your tickler file for the next day so you can begin mentally preparing for what needs your attention tomorrow.

6. Schedule time with other people. Working from a home office can be isolating. If you need more human contact, build in opportunities that will help you feel more connected to others. Join a service club or networking group, or treat yourself to having lunch or playing a sport once a week with a friend, colleague, or client…whatever it takes to feel more connected.

7. Schedule weekly “admin” time to tend to routine activities that you know need to be done regularly - filing, checking email, returning phone calls, invoicing, paying bills, etc. Although these activities are important, they are generally not urgent…but if they get neglected long enough they will become urgent when you cannot find something you need or a bill does not get paid by the due date.

NOTE: Not all hours are created equal. Pay attention to your own body rhythms. Schedule your “high brain” activities (things requiring creativity, for example) during your best time of day, and schedule the “low brain” activities (the auto pilot stuff) during your low energy time of the day.

8. Say NO to activities that are not important to you. ASK YOURSELF THE HARD QUESTIONS TO GET AN EASY LIFE!

Mark and Alex looked at each other dumbfounded. Both men had been far too busy in their first six months trading together to sit down and ask themselves the four key questions vital to business success.

At first, the two partners - each with more than ten years experience in the financial services sector - had been exhilarated with the amount of lucrative business their new venture was attracting. Six months down the line however, was a different story. Both men complained of feeling “burned out” and disappointed with the discovery that running a company wasn’t as much fun as they had first hoped.

My first question to the pair - which had been met with a blank look - was “What is the purpose of your business?” Their immediate response had been that they had decided to work together in a bid to share costs and earn a higher income. I repeated the question, and as our discussion ensued, Alex began to realise that they had never questioned the venture’s purpose - and had mistakenly believed that their short term objectives of making money was the company’s purpose.

In order to discover the company’s purpose, there were three more vital questions that needed to be posed and I decided to approach them in one hit. “One of the seven habits of highly effective people (as Steven Covey expressed in his book of the same name) is to ‘Start with the end in mind’. So - what is your vision for the company; when will it be achieved - and what will you do when the vision is accomplished?”

Mark started to laugh nervously and said that with the company in its infancy, surely it was too early to start planning for the future. “But what better time to plan than now?” I asked, adding that failing to plan at this stage was tantamount to planning to fail in the future.

Alex could see the validity of the questions, repeating for Mark’s benefit that it would be very hard for the pair to “arrive” if they didn’t actually know where they were going. With a little more gentle probing, Mark began to realise that he had never taken time out in his life to plan for anything - instead just hoping that his natural charm and optimism would get him through life.

“You know how successful you are now?” I asked Mark. “Well, imagine just how much more successful you could be if you were to have a vision, some SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Ritten & Timed) goals together with an action plan.”

Mark acknowledged the truth of my statement and, turning to Alex suggested that the pair use the rest of our time together to plan for the future. This aim however, was not easily achieved - not least because Mark and Alex had different dreams for the future. Having never discussed the matter between them, Alex hadn’t realised that Mark envisaged ultimately selling the business. Worse, Mark wanted to retire at 55 and sail the world with his new wife - a dream he had kept firmly to himself. In reality, this meant that Mark wanted to build - and sell - a successful business within a ten year timeframe.

Alex however, had a completely different view of the future. He wanted to leave a legacy - not only to his children but also to the community in which he had grown up. One of Alex’s key drivers was that he wanted to show that he was capable of success - proving not only his parents wrong but also his teachers! While Alex wasn’t planning on creating a huge conglomerate, he did want to continue - in his retirement years - to be involved with a thriving business in the capacity of a consultant.

As the discussion continued, it was clear that both men did agree that they wanted to build up a going concern within a decade. However if they were to realise their future visions, they would need to start thinking laterally now. One solution, for example, would be for Alex to buy out Mark’s share of the company in ten years time - thus enabling both men to live out their personal dreams in retirement.

Earlier in the session, Mark had been complaining how fast time was flying - remarking that the first six months of trading had “gone in the blink of an eye”. “Well,” I smiled, “if you want to build up your business within ten years - you have only 20 blinks of an eye left!” The point hit home, and Mark - with a nervous laugh - sank back in his chair and told Alex in no uncertain terms that they had better start working on their goals immediately!

Agreeing that we would all meet again in a month’s time, Mark and Alex said - to my delight - that the session had been very worthwhile as it had forced them to think about the really important questions that both had spent most of their lives trying to avoid. Finally, as he was walking through the door, Alex quipped, “I guess that if you ask yourself the easy questions you get a hard life - but if you ask yourself the hard questions you get an easy life!”

Eliminate Time Sucking Activities that Don’t Pay

Time is a precious commodity that we want more of to do the things we enjoy and to make more money. But are you letting time sucking activities that don’t pay to take over your life? For entrepreneurs wasting time on meaningless things could mean a deteriorating business and no money to pay the mortgage. It’s about time we cut this bad habit and take back control of our time.

Time sucking activities could be anything from watching too much TV, reading entertainment articles and celebrity gossip, checking your email 100 times a day, browsing forums without a purpose just to kill time, browsing stores and window shopping, playing online games all day and night etc.

Sometimes it’s fun to do those things once in a while but spending hours and hours a day on it is too excessive. At the end of the day we might wonder where did all the day go and have a bunch of things left undone. Stop putting things off because they’re not as fun as checking email or playing games. If you read entertainment magazines and play games for 3 years you’ll be in the same situation you’re in. These meaningless time sucking activities are costing you big bucks.

Make a list of things you will do less of each day or eliminate. Write down next to it approximately how much time you’ll save by eliminating or reducing the time you spent on it. Tally up the totals for a week, you might be surprised to see the results of how much time you waste. Don’t make excuses about why you don’t have time-make time. We all have time for the important stuff, just cut out the useless chitchats and online chatting.

What are your priorities? Is it your religion, family, and business? If you’re not finding time to spend on things that matter then its time that you rearranged your life around. Ask yourself, “How can I spend more times with the kids and spouse?” Many people think that watching TV with their family in the same room is spending time together. That is not quality time together. Plan a fun evening whether it’s taking the family out to dinner, helping the kids with homework, or playing board games together.

If your life is too hectic or stressful then you haven’t gotten time management done pat. Read up on new strategies to manage your time and apply it. Do unpleasant and important things first. Don’t put off things that will cause you stress or worry. Do it and get it done now. It’ll be a big weight off your shoulders not having a ticking time bomb around.

Are We Running out of Time?

What is time? Do we need more of it? Can time be your greatest asset and your greatest liability? Will time ever end? Is there an end and a beginning? If there is no beginning how can we have an end, and if there is no end how can there be a beginning? End, beginning, beginning, end, when will this madness end? We as humans believe in the birth of our selves as spiritual beings and that we have a soul.

I’ll go one step father and say that we all came from the one source and that source is the reason we can say that time only exist in the now here and not in the ever after were our soul or the part of us that leaves our body when our life is over in the now here and resides in that place that is changeless and timeless and goes on for evermore. What do you mean evermore isn’t there a place where time started and a time where it all ends?

I say that we are all energy that goes on forever and ever and since our conception from the creator we shall always exist in one form or another, we shall never cease to exist. I am not here to debate the fact of the matter of were you spend this time at, or how you spend that time, What I am saying is once we are created we shall change our present energy form and go on into eternity and never cease to not be there in the ever present world of spirit. Were it is in this matter we are always going to be in the energy form that which we were born into creation and that form is endless and eternal.

kingdom of God is within you”, you will notice that he didn’t say some of us, or this one and that one, He said the Kingdom of God is within YOU, now who does that leave out? That’s right no one! So just as our creator is endless and eternal so too are we endless and eternal and shall go on forever more so too can we expect to go on forever and ever. He did not create us then say to us, one day you will cease to exist. Look at the common religion here in the west we see that it is thought that you either go to Heaven or Hell; it doesn’t say any where that I am aware of, that you cease to exist.

I am not aware of any religion that teaches we shall one day cease to exist and then be no more, all gone, done, over, finished, never to be to be found. I am not trying to plant any certain religion in your mind, yet I am simply pointing out that in the Christian religion you either go to heaven or hell, that God doesn’t just snap his or her fingers and its lights out for you. I am by no means saying that if he really wanted to he couldn’t, this is not the case, so if God so chooses that One day you cease to exist then you would certainly cease to exist! What I am saying is this, I can’t find anywhere that I am aware of the fact that we one day you cease to be and that we are just here for a trial run and if he is not satisfied then poof we are gone.

Know that you were created changeless and eternal and that you go on forever more and that should relive you to know that you have an endless amount of time, yet it doesn’t give you the right to waste the time you have in the world of form and that you shouldn’t make the most of it and try to find out what your purpose in this life is, and build from there, because you have a higher calling and when you figure out what it is then you can get to work to make that dream a reality, to become the best that you can possibly become and this shall indeed make the one true God happy and feel the love that your life brought forth and this is the reason behind your being. So relax to an extent as you have all the time in the world and for that matter all the time not in this world also, as they will all someday be the same for that energy mass that makes up what we are used to calling yourselves will suddenly change in a twinkling of an eye to spirit and the truth shall set you free!

You can be Happy

To put yourself in a happy mood is the least complicated of the three. Most of the times it can boil down to a simple change of posture.
Just to sit up straight, breath properly and open your eyes completely can do the trick. I learned that by imaginary trying to make my ears stretch will automatically make me sit up straight.

Nevertheless, what works magically all the time when it comes to changing ones mood, is to put on a big smile. Even and especially when you don’t feel like it. Because after a while, you won’t be able to help feeling better. Once your physiology changes, your emotions will inevitably follow.
To have enduring joy, however, is a bit more profound though, but to feel better and in a more pleasant present mood is just a matter of emotions. You can definitely control those.

Of course the beauty of this good news is the fact that it’s completely free! I guess the old cliché applies here perfectly: “You cannot buy happiness”.

Ways to Use Freeform Collage to Boost Creativity

One way I like to use to boost my creativity is freeform collage. Now you may be asking “What the heck is freeform collage?” Freeform collage is where you take images and use them to generate ideas for your writing, painting, beading and other forms of artwork. The reason I’ve termed it freeform is you don’t actually glue the images to the paper. Unlike traditional collage, the idea is not to come up with one set of images, but to play with the images like a puzzle to give your mind new fuel with which to be creative.

Here’s what you need to do freeform collage, and some ideas for how you can use it to boost your creativity. You’ll need:

1. Pictures, either from magazines, the internet, or even copies of family photos.

2. A piece of cardboard or heavy paper such as card stock. I prefer 8 x 11, but you can pick any size paper you choose.

Once you’ve got a good collection of images, then the idea is to randomly pick pictures and lay them on the paper. Continue to choose images and layer them however you want to until your paper is completely covered. Once you feel your collage is complete allow the collage to speak to you. What do it remind you of? Maybe the lines of a poem will come to your mind, or maybe the flowers in the corner will give you an idea of an article you can write on gardening. If no ideas come to you, you can remove that set of images and try again. Even if nothing comes to you the second time around, you can also leave the collage for a day or so and see if later on it inspires you once your subconscious has had a chance to observe it for a bit. Another way to nudge our creativity is to write a journal entry about the collage, or if you draw well, you could try reproducing the collage in a drawing. The ideas are endless.

Another benefit of using freeform collage is you can use the same images over and over again, just be sure to replenish your stack with new ones every so often so you aren’t using the same ones over and over again. Otherwise the brain will get used to them and start losing interest in paying attention.

The idea for this article actually came to me while I was playing with images I’d cut out from magazines. I hope you find freeform collage just as useful in boosting your creativity!

Art, Problems and Solutions: What To Do If A Painting Just Won’t Work

When you are working on a painting and you get to the point
where it is just not working, what in the world do you do?

Turn the painting upside-down

Turning a painting upside-down tricks the eye into seeing
what you are working on in a completely different way. All of
a sudden you will be able solve a problem that baffled you
minutes before.

Hold the painting up to a mirror

Looking at a painting in a mirror works very much the same
way as turning a painting upside-down does, only the
results are even more dramatic. The problem is even more
glaring and it is an enormous relief to see what is not
working and to be able to figure out the solution.

Stop painting

If you’ve turned a painting upside down and held it up to a
mirror and you still can’t figure out what the problem is–stop
painting. You may need to stop painting for a few minutes,
few hours, few days, months or even years. It depends on
you and it depends on the painting.

The worse thing you can do is to keep working on the
painting. It won’t solve the problem, you will become
frustrated and the painting will become over-worked. It is a
really good way to ruin a work of art.

There will come a point when you will know exactly what to
do and can’t imagine why you never saw the solution before.

When I am working on a painting and I can’t find a solution
to the problem, I always try to remember a phrase someone
once told me which is: “If you don’t know what to do, do
nothing.”

How You Can Improve Your Creativity - What You Need to Know

Would you like to enhance your creativity? Do you think that increased creativity is something that would improve your life?

Before you answer yes or no to that question, take some time to explore what the word “creativity” means to you.

If you think that creativity is something that you only need if you’re an artist, while you happen to be a middle-manager in a corporation, you may decide that increased creativity is not really important to you. But creativity is actually something far broader than artistic expression, and it’s required in many areas of life.

Your idea of a creative person might be someone who lives in a loft, painting gigantic canvases all day long. Or perhaps a writer at her computer, working on a long novel. Or a musician, actor, or singer performing on stage to an audience. All these people are expressing themselves artistically, and they can all rightly be said to be creative people, even if no one else enjoys their art.

But what about an entrepreneur who has an idea for a new product, who forms a new company to produce and distribute it, eventually employing hundreds of people? Doesn’t this also require creativity?

What about a research scientist toiling in a lab, developing new compounds in an effort to cure disease? Isn’t this creative? What about a single mother who manages to come up with healthy delicious meals on a tiny budget? Isn’t that creativity?

To one person, creativity can mean gluing seashells to a picture frame. To another, creativity might mean solving a grand unified theory in physics. And to another person, being creative might mean coming up with an ingenious new way to speed up a factory assembly line.

When we define creativity only in terms of artistic expression, we miss a lot of other potential applications for creative thinking and problem solving.

An artist painting a picture, or a writer working on a novel, both have something in common with the researcher in the lab, and the entrepreneur, and the person gluing seashells to picture frames.

They are all working on problems and devising solutions that didn’t exist before. These people are using their minds to imagine fresh ways of doing something, putting together existing forms and ideas in new ways.

They may be creating a new idea, a new look, a new product, or new technique. Sometimes the ability to be more creative can lead to personal fame and fortune; sometimes it just provides a deep sense of personal satisfaction.

Can we improve our ability to be creative? Yes, in fact, learning to be more creative can be quite enjoyable and easy to do. Most of us were very creative as children, before we learned the official rules about how things are supposed to be. We can resurrect our ability to be more creative by exploring some of the many techniques that have been developed to improve creative and artistic ability, as well as to improve creative problem solving.

Some of the techniques that are used to improve creativity include brainstorming, mind-mapping, various forms of hypnosis and meditation, and guided imagery.

The techniques that have been developed to try enhance creativity all have one thing in common. They are all trying to bypass the inner “judge” or “critic” we have in our minds.

Most of us have an inner voice that is running a constant commentary on everything we think and do. We might barely notice this inner voice much of the time, yet it has a great impact on what we can accomplish in our life.

In many of us this inner voice is usually very negative. No matter what we want think about, or want to do, this inner voice is running like a tape in the background of our minds, criticizing our ideas, our performance, and our ability to be successful.

When we come up with a new idea, our inner voice may be saying, “This idea is stupid.” Or it might tell us, “I should never be mediocre or average, I must be brilliant and perfect all the time. You can’t be creative, and be critical at the same time. These two processes require different ways of thinking. The critical, judgmental, analytical function of the brain is not the part that knows how to generate creative ideas.

Even the types of brainwaves that you generate when you are being rational and analytical are quite different than the brainwaves that go with maximum creativity.
