The Birth Of Distance Learning

The World Wide Web has been used for many purposes since it was
created by academics to support military research and logistics.
At first it was solely the realm of academics and military
strategists. Then over time it became a source for gathering
vast amounts of information and providing that to select
individuals and companies. But the introduction and rapid
expansion of personal office and home computers with Internet
access quickly changed the Web’s focus to commerce and
communication.

Almost overnight the Internet became a primary tool for
communication, not only from the experts, but between ordinary
people as well. And of course, the amount of information
available grew as fast as the number of users. So what you ended
up with was vast amounts of information and the ability to
communicate back and forth with people all over the world. The
natural result was a need to try and bring the people together
with the information and the World Wide Web was the perfect
means to accomplish that task.

Like many other aspects of the digital revolution this
interaction was at first limited to the experts and academics
themselves but a personal home computer and Internet access
forced the academics to open up this process. After a while some
of them realized that if the technology and interest existed,
then why not utilize them to help people become better educated.
So they tried offering a few basic distance learning programs
online through various academic institutions and what they found
was that the public’s appetite for distance learning was almost
insatiable.

Women who were at home caring for their children still wanted to
get a better education. Veterans returning home from foreign
wars and assignments wanted to upgrade their skills to build a
new life after service to their country. People who lived in
remote areas or lacked the ability to travel to larger
university or college centers wanted access to the benefits of a
higher education. Even people who were already in the workforce
wanted to improve their skills or learn new ones to compete for
better jobs and a better future.

The result was an explosion of opportunities and programs that
offered distance learning designed to meet this growing demand.
Today millions of Americans are benefiting from this new way of
learning and even getting an online degree by studying and
learning online. They are fulfilling their dreams and building
better lives for themselves no matter where they live or even
how old they are.

Distance learning may be phenomena of the Internet age but it is
clearly rooted in the simple desire of human beings to learn and
improve themselves. In the long run that’s a very good thing,
not just for the individual, but for our country and the whole
world.

How to Maintain a Drum Set

It is full of fun to play a drum but at the same time one must take care of the drum set. There are few steps to maintain a drum set and one can easily follow them. The following steps are listed below:

1. One must not forget to detune your drums slightly before packing up, especially in more humid conditions. This preserves the life of the heads and allows them maintain their elasticity.

2. Don’t miss Drum Bum’s drum tab database.

3. When you change your drumheads, write the date in small numbers off to the side of each head. This will help you know how long it’s been since the last time it’s been changed. Remember that there is no specific period of time to gauge when you should
replace your heads. It should depend on how they sound (feel), how hard you hit and how often you play.

4. Simply tape 4 or 5 pennies to the back of a 5″ strip of duct tape (about 1″ wide) and tape it to the bell of your ride. This will allow your cymbal to sizzle as if it had rivets in it.

5. One must remember the local library as a rich resource of information about drums, drum set, miscellaneous drum things and overall percussion. So one must keep in contact with them to maintain a drum set.

6. It is also very necessary to clean the drum set from time to time. It is cleaned by sandpaper. Sometimes comet used for this use. If that scares you, then try dish soap and water with a heavy nylon scrub brush. A cheap old hair brush with thick wiry bristles works great.
Best type of maintenance is always wiping your cymbals down before storing them away. If you still have the plastic bag that your cymbal came in, put the cymbal in the bag before putting it in your case. This helps to keep gunk off the cymbal while it’s being stored and helps prevent the cymbals from wearing each other down as they’re bounced around during travel.

A Simple Shoppers Guide on LCD TV’s

In the region of about a decade ago the contemplation of a wall-hung telly may possibly have seemed like something from a sci-fi film It was out of the reach of most avid buyers, with elevated charges that requested taking out a 2nd mortgage to pay for these especially shiny tellies. Nevertheless, over a period these astonishing television sets reached the point of attainability. Although, currently not something you might just go out and buy, it has recently increasingly become much more of an option. Retail prices for these flat panel HDTV sets are nowadays declining faster than new house prices, & have made the daydream a reality.

At Present there are 2 contending flat-panel equipment; plasma and LCD. Though each brand delivers a clear picture & these television sets can deem alike from the front, the equipment on the inside is appreciably different. And although LCD televisions have been limited to 37-inches & below, sets with the liquid crystal display technology are now in sizes as big as plasma. Digital Direct has cheap Digital Flat Screen TV?s on offer online.

Nonetheless, in spite of that, a lot of buyers consider plasma to provide a number of very important selling points over LCD TVs. The largest advantages is that plasma television sets classically incorporate deeper black levels-indicating that the blacks are really black and not merely just a dark shade of gray. This in turn means that the colours are much more bright and natural. The most recent models from Sharp & Panasonic have actually taken the black levels to better depths, & so have engineered the greatest pictures we have watched to date.

Irrespective of the reports that plasma television sets “needs to be recharged” after ten thousand hours, nothing can be far more from the truth. Today’s flat panel plasma TV’s would often survive for 60,000 hours or more, awarding you with years of amazing telly viewing. Even though there has been an anxiety over problems like that of burn-in (rightly so, as this could possible ruin that expensive plasma TV). the recent models consist of components to handle image retention, providing pixel alter methods that gradually move the whole screen and more crucially, take away any ghosting should static pictures in fact “stick” the picture. This consists of a white wash mode in addition to an inverse mode to take out all the burn-in.

Siberia, Russia, Part 7 - The Trans-Siberian Railway

After deciding to move to Siberia for a year to teach at the Chita State Technical University, I embarked on a travel odyssey unlike any other. In this entry, we pick up the trip leaving the train station in Khabarovsk.

A Train To Nowhere?

In deciding to travel to Chita, Siberia, I had originally estimated a travel time of three days. Okay, maybe three at the outside figuring time changes and such.

As day 4 of the trip headed into the afternoon, I was finally on the train that would take me to Chita and figured I would be there in a day or so. I would finally get to see the beautiful and extreme landscape of Russia. To make things even better, I would get to brag to my friends about riding on the famous Trans-Siberian railway. This was going to be great. As is often the case with anticipated events, reality threw an ugly wrench in the proceedings.

Stop…Go…Stop…Go

In California, there are two types of trains you can take. The first is an express train that pretty much takes you from point A to point B with few stops in between. For those traveling shorter distances, there is a “slow train” that stops at every little town and station. In Russia, we were clearly on the slow train.

As we pulled out of the train station in Khabarovsk, anticipation was in the air. The train slowly gained speed. We stared out the window as the city started to pass at an increasing pace. After about 5 minutes, we stared out the window as the city started to pass at a DECREASING pace. After a few more minutes, we stopped at another train station.

Ah, there are probably two big stations in the city and it makes sense to pick up everyone for the trip across the country. Soon enough, the whistle blew and off we went again. Smiles spread across our face. These disappeared roughly 5 minutes later as we stopped again.

My god, how many train stations are there in this city? I can tell you there are at least 5 since we stopped at that many. With time spent sitting in each little train station, an hour had passed and we weren’t even out of the city!

As I stood at a window in the hall, a Russian man heard me muttering and decided to practice his English. We chatted. I remarked on the number of stops. He grimaced and told me the trip to Chita would take 3 plus days. I grimaced. And nearly cried like a small child. Three days in a train compartment no bigger than a closet. Oh, my.

Then he told me the food car on the train was closed for the trip. Since this is a clean web site, I can’t print the words I uttered at that moment. Just picture the reaction of Homer Simpson on learning there is no more beer in Springfield.

My new Russian friend smiled and said, “What does that word mean? We never learned that.”

8 Essential Questions to Ask Your Home Inspector

Congratulations! You’ve decided to purchase a home. We all know that when purchasing a home, every detail is an important one. And choosing a home inspector is no exception. It’s critical to choose an inspector the same way you’ve chosen a real estate professional - very carefully! You’ll get a great educational experience when you hire a professional with the right credentials.

Working with a home inspector isn’t complicated; however, unless armed with the right questions to ask, you may get stuck with a less than capable individual. Here are my top 8 questions to ask your next home inspector:

  1. Does the inspector come from a construction background?
It’s great that your inspector is a nice person, but what did they do before inspecting homes? Do they bring a wealth of knowledge about the construction trades, building, or remodeling? Or were they a hairdresser in a previous life? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not picking on hairdressers - but that occupation certainly doesn’t have anything to do with inspecting a house!
  2. Does the inspector hold the appropriate license and meet all requirements for home inspectors in your area or state, and where can you go to verify this license?
This question may not be applicable in all states - there are states without licensing requirements for home inspectors. But if your state has some kind of requirements, you need to know what they are, and where you can go to verify that your chosen inspector has done what it takes to be state-compliant. Verification is essential, because many states have the capability to track continuing education of the inspector as well as complaints.
  3. Is the inspector a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI)?
This is critical! ASHI is the oldest, largest, and most respected organization for home inspectors in the country. They also maintain the highest standards and ethics for home inspectors. If your inspector is a member of this organization, you can be sure that they have passed The National Home Inspectors Exam, and they have completed all training and administrative requirements for membership. You can even verify membership status at www.ASHI.org. The inspector may be a member of other organizations, but none have requirements as strict as ASHI. And don’t be fooled by those companies who claim to inspect to “ASHI standards” - if they aren’t a bonifide ASHI member, find another inspector.
  4. How long has the inspector been in the inspection business, and how many inspections has he performed during this time?
Longevity gives comfort that the inspector will be with you in the future as new needs and issues arise. But if he’s only done 12 inspections during his several years in business, that’s not good! Your home buying decision is far too important to be a practice place for a part-time inspector.
  5. Does your inspector have experience in homes similar to the home you are having inspected?
All homes have some systems and features in common, but a brand new home has risks and issues that differ from an historic beauty from the year 1855. Only someone who has walked the walk and crawled the crawl numerous times in similar homes can sleuth out those important items that are specific to your age, size, and type of home.
  6. Will your inspector walk on the roof, crawl in the crawlspace, go into the basement, and climb into the attic space (if any of these are applicable)?
Your inspector should be capable of going and willing to go into those places where others fear to tread! These are the places that must be seen to best protect the customer. There a times when those locations cannot be completely inspected due to physical risk to the inspector, risk to the equipment, or seasonal limitations. But for the inspector to not inspect those locations because he doesn’t want to, is scared of the dark, or is too ample to fit into those spaces is unacceptable.
  7. Does the completed report include photographs?
Often, the report will contain descriptions of damage or defect in locations of the home that only the inspector was able to access, like roof-tops or crawl spaces. You will want pictures of these areas to make your understanding of the scope and location of the damage clear. It also makes repairs simpler to get estimated when a photograph is available.
  8. When will the completed report be delivered, and can it be emailed?
Often the buying decision is time critical, you want to be sure you will receive your completed report in time to read, review, and respond. The best companies can deliver the report to you on-site, right at the home, just as the inspection is completed.

Finally, be sure to attend the home inspection. There is no substitute for the complete inspection experience; the report generated is only a small piece of the inspection. When you attend the inspection, see the process, ask questions, and become educated about your home, you’ll gain great comfort and confidence in your buying decision. Good luck, and happy home buying!

Clear-a-debt - How to Avoid ATM Fees

Avoiding ATM Fees

I don’t know how you feel about it, but I really hate the idea
of paying fees to use an ATM to get my own money from my bank.

In fact, my husband and I have never paid any because we
faithfully use only our bank’s ATM machines.

But our discipline puts us in the minority. Last year ATM users
paid fees that poured an estimated $4 billion into financial
institution coffers.

“ATMs are a cash cow for banks,” says Edmund Mierzwinski, U.S.
PIRG (Public Interest Research Group)consumer program director
who also runs StopATMFees.com. Even though it is cheaper for
banks when you use an ATM rather than going into the bank, he
says, they charge more for it.

Expect to pay even more

And the fees are rising. According to the 2001 U.S. PIRG survey
of banks and credit unions, the cost of using another bank’s ATM
machine is now $2.86 per transaction, up from $1.01 just five
years ago.

You pay two fees when you stray from your own institution’s
ATMs. The first hit, charged by your own bank, is called the
foreign, or “off-us,” fee; it currently averages $1.39 per
transaction according to the U.S. PIRG survey. (At big banks,
the average is $1.52.)

About 30 to 70 cents of this fee is known as the interchange
fee and goes to the bank whose ATM you used as compensation for
handling the transaction. Even if your bank does not charge you
when you use another institution’s ATM, it pays this fee.

The second fee, a surcharge imposed on you by the other bank
for using its ATM, is now $1.47 ($1.55 for big banks) according
to U.S. PIRG. These fees show up right on your ATM receipt.

This fee is drawing a lot of heat from consumer advocates and
some states. So far, Iowa is the only state with an active ban
on ATM surcharges. The ultimate fate of the ban is still tied up
in court, and there are ongoing court challenges of other bans
such as those in San Francisco and Santa Monica, Cal.

The newest fee twist, according to U.S. PIRG, is that some
banks, especially large ones, have started “renting” ATM cards
to customers for a monthly fee of $1 or so, which would mean
adding another $12 or more to your annual cost of using ATMs.
Banks point out that the fees pay for more ATMs, making ATMs
even more convenient for consumers, and to maintain, protect and
advertise ATMs.

Minimize the pain

Whenever possible, use your own bank
’s or credit union’s ATMs
, which should avoid all ATM
fees. Also try some of these tactics:

Switch to a bank or credit union that doesn’t impose ATM
surcharges. Generally, the larger the bank, the higher the fees.
Smaller banks and many credit unions do not charge surcharges at
all. Find out if you can join a credit union.

Bankrate.com also surveys ATM rates for large banks and thrift
institutions in 35 major metropolitan areas. In the Washington,
D.C. area, for example, Citibank stands out as a deal; it
charges $1 for both its foreign fee (for customers who use other
ATMs) and its surcharge (for non customers using its ATMs).

See if your area has a regional alliance of banks or
credit unions whose members agree not to impose surcharges on
each other’s ATM customers. This multiplies the number of
surcharge-free ATMs available in an area.

See if you can get back some extra cash

when you swipe your ATM card through an electronic
terminal at the check-out counter in a supermarket or
convenience store. About 82% of banks do not impose a surcharge
on those transactions, says Greg McBride.

Beware of non-bank ATMs

that are not near banks, such as mobile ATMs at sporting
events, in bars or at festivals, for example. Fees there are
often higher than at banks.

Use travelers’ checks or credit cards

when you are on the road (but not credit card cash
advances, which are even more expensive than ATM withdrawals).
If you are traveling outside of the U.S., ask your bank if any
additional fees or surcharges apply to ATM transactions abroad
and switch institutions if they seem too high. If you want to

Buying a Vibrator?

There is a massive range of vibes available in different sizes, shapes and colours. Each one will have a different type and sensitivity of shiver and every person will require a different level of vibration determined by the sensitivity of one’s erogenous zones. A new retailer asked over 160 UK women in July what their very favourite marital aid was along with other personal questions.

It was found that the most very favourite marital aid for UK women was the vibrator, and they just really liked it! Women were so excited by the idea of a extra large vibrator that many of them would use it straight after coming home from work. The best types of vibrator were the Jessica bunny vibrators as they help to stimulate the clit hood as well as inserting into the love tunnel.

The other discovery the new adult toy site found out was that the sex toy users just loved using their marital aid on a daily basis by themselves. If the UK ladies were in a good relationship they would use it with their loving partners.

The 2nd most popular marital aid was the exciting dildo. Dongs are similar to vibrators except they do not have batteries or vibrate. Dongs come in all shapes and sizes from two inches to 12 inches. They can come with suction cups to have an incredible experience hands free and can easily attach to a bath or toilet set. Dongs have been a firm favourite since the 90?s and looks like they will be around for a long time.

If you love sex toys you should try it with your favourite Female Sex Creams

A new retailer found the best way to pleasure a women is to purchase them both a vibrator and a dildo.

Septic Tank Maintenance Secrets

When you buy a car, you are given an owner’s manual with instructions on how to care for your car. Septic tanks can cost as much or more than a car, unfortunately nobody gives you a manual when they are installed. Some people don’t even know they have a septic tank! As a result, many septic systems fail unnecessarily.

The Price for Failure is Steep

The price for failure is steep in two way. More than 1200 people in the US die each year from contaminated water, and failing septic systems are a leading source of waterborne disease outbreaks in the country today. In a 2000 EPA report, 31 states listed septic systems as their second greatest potential source of groundwater contamination. Septic system replacement is also very expensive, with costs often running from $5,000 to $20,000 or more. Fortunately, there are some highly effective, ineffective steps you can take to eliminate this problem. Before discussing solutions, let’s look at why septic systems fail.

Septic tank maintenance is actually pretty easy to understand. When a system fails, the tank itself doesn’t fail- the drainfield soil fails. In most cases the soil fails when it gets plugged up with solids and won’t allow liquid to pass through it. For example, it can get plugged with solids from the tank if the tank hasn’t been pumped, or with lint from a washing machine. Now for your solutions:

1. Use a washing machine filter.

Did you know that washing machines are a leading cause of septic system failure? The primary culprit is lint generated by washing machines, which clogs the soil in drain fields. Did you know that a typical family washing machine produces enough lint each year to carpet and entire living room floor! Lint screens and nylon traps found in hardware stores trap 5% or less of these particles. Because they are so light and small, the lint particles do not settle out in the septic tank. Instead, they stay in suspension and are flushed out to the drain field, where they plug up the pores of the soil bed.

To compound the problem, much of our clothing is now manufactured with synthetic materials such as polyester and nylon. These substances are not biodegradable, and will not break down in a septic system. Instead, they accumulate and plug the soil. Once these materials enter the soil, there is no way to remove them.

The good news is that lint can be prevented from entering the septic system through the use of a reusable, inline filter which attaches to your washing machine discharge hose. The filter, called the Filtrol 160, retails for $139.95.

2. Avoid Excessive Water Use

You can also damage your septic system by doing a large number of laundry loads in a short period of time. In standard septic systems, solid materials settle in the tank, while effluent flows out into the ground. If you put more water into the system than it is built to handle, the high volume of water will flood your system, and can also stir up and flush solids out of the tank into the drain field (in fact, septic pumpers use water from their hoses to help break up solids in your tank before pumping them out).

A typical washing machine can use up to 60 gallons of water per wash load. On a heavy day you can easily put 400, 500 or 600 gallons of water through the system in a few hours. The solution is to spread out your water use. Do one or two loads of laundry per day, rather than 10-12 loads on Saturday morning. Water softeners can also damage your system by putting too much water through the septic system. These devices can put several hundred gallons of water down the drain every week, water that is not contaminated and does not need to go through the treatment process.

There are a couple solutions to this problem. You can upgrade your softener with a newer efficient model that uses less water and regenerates on demand, instead of a timer system that regenerates whether you use water or not. You can also install a mini septic system for your water softener.

3. Prevent Solids from Leaving the Tank

First of all, you should get your tank pumped on a regular basis to prevent excessive accumulation of solids in the tank. Under normal conditions, you should have the tank inspected and pumped every 1-3 years. Very important: tanks should be pumped and inspected through the manhole cover, not the inspection pipe. Your septic contractor should also install an effluent filter in the exit baffle of the tank. Effluent filters stop the larger solids from getting out to the drainfield. They are cleaned out every few years when you have your tank pumped. They are usually only about $80. Effluent filters are cheap insurance and along with a washing machine filter, one of the best things you can do to protect your system.

4. Use of Household Cleaning Products

Excessive use of these products can contribute to septic system failure. If you do over 5 loads a week containing bleach, problems could arise. Avoid powdered detergents as they contain plastic fillers that can plug up your lines and drain field. Also, be careful with harsh automatic toilet bowl cleaners, which have put quite a few systems out of commission.

5. Should I Use a Separate System for My Washing Machine?

Some people say you should use a separate system for your washing machine, called a laundry interceptor. However, this is not necessary and in fact undesirable. Washing machines should discharge into the regular system because it actually works better than discharging into its own system. In order to work, septic systems require bacteria colonies which break down biodegradable matter. These bacteria require “food” which is found in our wastewater, but not in detergent. Without “food” these bacteria colonies die out and the system fails. Many people who have installed these systems have found this out the hard way. A research project conducted in several east coast states utilized some rather high tech systems for washing machine discharge and many began failing in as little as eight months.

Septic Tank Maintenance Tips:

Do: divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways and other areas away from your drainfield.
Have your septic tank pumped regularly. It should also be inspected for leaks, cracks and to make sure the exit baffle is in place.
Install lint and effluent filters.
Spread out your laundry loads.
Compost your garbage or put it in the trash

Don’t:

Use a garbage disposal.
These appliances normally double the amount of solids added to the tank!
Flush sanitary napkins, disposable diapers or other non-biodegradable products into your system.
Dump solvents, oils, paint thinners, disinfectants, pesticides or poisons down the drain as they can disrupt the treatment process and contaminate the groundwater.
Dig in your drainfield or build anything over it.
Drive over your drainfield or compact the soil in any way.
Plant trees or shrubbery close to the septic system, because the roots can get in the lines and plug them. Grass is the only thing that should be planted on or near a drainfield.

If Your System Fails

In quite a few cases, a tune-up can fix your system and you can avoid the high costs of replacing the system. This tuneup includes properly pumping the tank, cleaning (jetting) the drainfield lines, and installing washing machine and effluent filters. If these measures are not sufficient, some failed systems can be rejuvenated by fracturing the soil. This process utilizes a hollow tube inserted into the soil, then a 300 pound blast or air is injected into the soil creating thousands of tiny fissures. These fissures allow the drainfield to drain, creating an oxygen atmosphere and the aerobic bacterial colonies to repopulate. Aerobic bacteria, which require oxygen, typically live in the top 26 inches of the drainfield and process waste much more quickly than anaerobic bacteria. This process can be performed in a matter of hours with no digging or damage to the yard. One company which performs this service is Terralift International (http://www.terraliftinternational.com).

If you have a clay soil which has become plugged due to sodium from wastewater binding with the clay, Septic Seep can help. These product releases sodium bonded clays and reopens soil, restoring passages air and water. It also has the benefit of dispersing greases and scums that clog the soil.

An Amazing Consumers Article on High Definition Television’s

In the region of about a decade ago the contemplation of a wall-mounted telly might have been seen like an electronics fantasy. It was out of the reach of the majority of electronic shoppers, with ridiculously high charges that called for taking out a 2nd mortgage to come up with the money for these ultra smooth tellies. But over a period these astonishing TV sets reached the level of attainability. Though, currently not something you can just go out and pay for, it has nowadays out of the blue become much more of an option. Marked-up prices for these flat panel High-Definition TV sets are at this present time decreasing more rapidly than new residential house prices, & have made the fantasy a reality.

These Days there are two contending flat-panel technologies: plasma & LCD. Though each model offers a brilliant picture and these TV sets can appear comparable from the front, the equipment on the inside is by a long way different. And even though LCD tellies have been limited to thirty-seven inches and smaller, television sets with the liquid crystal display technology are at the present in sizes as big as plasma.

Nevertheless, even with that, a lot of customers judge plasma to provide quite a few of critical advantages over LCD televisions. The main selling points is that plasma sets naturally have deeper black levels-signifying that the blacks are in reality black & not simply a dark shade of gray. This in turn means that the colours are much more striking & credible. The most recent models from Sony and Panasonic have in actual fact taken the black levels to incredible depths, and in consequence have constructed the best images we have seen to date. If you are looking for a Plasma TV, then visit Digital Direct, one of the leading mail order electrical goods providers in the UK.

Despite the gossip that plasma television sets “needs to be recharged” after eight-thousand hours, nothing could be further from the reality. These days flat panel plasma TV’s should often run for sixty-thousand hours or more, awarding you with years of enormous television viewing.
